Sonic Drive In New York Style Hot Dog Review

Today is Wiener Wednesday and you know what that means? It’s time to drop another Wiener Review!

Today’s wiener review comes from Sonic Drive-In. I ordered the New York Style hot dog with Ocean Water to wash it down. Read more about Ocean Water here. A New York Style hot dog is traditionally topped with spicy brown mustard, sauerkraut or sauteed onions with tomato paste. Sonic’s dog had all of the fore mentioned minus the tomato paste and the onions were lightly grilled.

The service at Sonic was friendly and speedy. I didn’t wait more than a few minutes for my order to be brought to my vehicle in the pouring rain by an extremely cheery carhop.

The price was reasonable about $4.00 for a hot dog and medium drink which fit my budget perfectly since pay day was far off in the horizon. I didn’t expect too much from a $2.00 hot dog but I was pleasantly surprised.

Summary

I wasn’t expecting too much base on the thrifty price but I was pleasantly surprised that Sonic’s New York style wiener was actually pretty good. The mildly spicy brown mustard and sauerkraut provided a tangy pop in contrast to the saltiness of the wiener. The grilled onions could have been a little more well done but their crunchiness and pungency didn’t distract from the overall flavor. Perhaps it has to do with the reasonable price point but this wiener was very much lacking in girth and was almost drowned out by the bun and toppings.
